As the beginning of term rushes ever closer, we are getting ready to welcome our boarders back to St Francis’ College. The Boarding Team (and, of course, Boardington Bear) are especially excited to welcome our new boarders into our wonderful boarding community.
Starting life in a boarding house is an exciting adventure, but we understand that it can also feel a little scary. New boarders may be looking forward to making friends and gaining independence while also feeling nervous about leaving home, learning new routines and finding their way around. These mixed emotions are completely natural.
For parents and guardians, this can be an emotional time too. Preparing together and talking openly about the first few days can help everyone feel a little calmer and more confident.
Making Your Room Feel Like Home
Boarding bedrooms have all the essential furniture and bedding, but bringing a few familiar things can make a new room feel much more like home. Photographs, posters, a favourite teddy or a special duvet cover can provide comfort and allow boarders to add their own personality to their space.
Storage is limited, so we ask boarders to pack thoughtfully and bring no more than two large suitcases, ideally weighing no more than 18kg each

Preparing for Everyday Life
Alongside school uniform or suitable Sixth Form clothing, boarders will need comfortable outfits for evenings, weekends and activities. The British weather can be unpredictable, so remember to pack a warm coat, suitable footwear and clothes for both mild and colder days.
Everyday essentials should include pyjamas, a dressing gown, slippers, towels, toiletries and a small wash bag or basket.
One of our most important reminders is to name everything! Clothes, towels, bedding and laundry bags can easily become mixed up when lots of people live together. Even socks and underwear should be clearly labelled.
Checking Before You Pack
Please check the guidance regarding electrical items before packing. All electrical equipment will be safety tested, and some items—such as heaters, cooking appliances, fridges and personal kettles for younger boarders—are not permitted.
Any medication must be handed to the Boarding Team on arrival and should not be kept in bedrooms unless agreed in advance. Passports, important documents and cash should also be given to staff for safekeeping.
If you are unsure about anything, please ask. The Boarding Team will always be happy to help.
The First Few Days
The first few days will be busy, with new names to remember, routines to learn and lots of information to take in. New boarders may feel excited one moment and homesick the next. This is perfectly normal, and everyone settles in at their own pace.
On arrival, new boarders will be welcomed by a member of the Boarding Team and shown to their room. They will receive an induction tour, meet their Boarding Buddy and be supported as they begin to find their place within the school and boarding community.
Returning boarders also have an important part to play. A friendly smile, an invitation to join an activity or a little help with an unfamiliar routine can make a huge difference to someone who is new.
An Exciting New Chapter
Beginning life in a boarding house is a significant moment. There may be a few nerves, some emotional goodbyes and perhaps one or two forgotten items. However, there will also be new friendships, exciting experiences, growing confidence and plenty of special memories waiting to be made.
Take a breath, check your packing list and remember that nobody expects everything to be perfect on the first day.
Boardington Bear and all the Boarding Staff are looking forward to welcoming both new and returning boarders into our boarding community. We cannot wait to see you all very soon!
